6/2/2023 0 Comments Knut hamsun gladIn regard to Hamsun's evolution as a writer, it's far harder to describe than what came in his wake. Whether we like the man or not, it seems to me both foolish and pointless to continue ignoring the significance of Hamsun's work - if for no other reason than it's an important part of our literary evolution and denying this can do nothing but cloud our understanding of our ourselves as readers and writers. Hamsun's writing, however, is another matter. He betrayed both his country and more importantly humanity in general and deserves every bit of the scorn that's been heaped upon him. With 1890's Hunger, Hamsun unleashed the first in a series of novels that anticipated everything from the terrifying absurdities of Kafka to the desiccated ennui of the existentialists and even Charles Bukowski's autobiographical explorations.ĭespite this, Hamsun is a writer who today is shunned by much of the literary establishment, not because his writing has lost any of its lustre, I'd argue, but because of his far-right political views, which came to a head during the second world war with his open support of Hitler and Norway's post-invasion Nazi puppet government. I'd take this further and say that he's the father of postmodern literature as well. Isaac Bashevis Singer famously called Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun the father of modern literature. Aphrodite only smiled, and asked who had a better claim to beauty's prize than the goddess of beauty herself. Athene claimed that she had the better right, for the beauty of wisdom such as hers surpassed all else. Hera claimed it as wife to Zeus, the All-father, and queen of all the gods. Then the three greatest of the goddesses each claimed that it was hers. The apple lay gleaming among the piled fruits and the brimming wine cups and bending close to look at it, everyone could see the words "To the fairest" traced on its side. Then she breathed upon the guests once, and vanished. Many guests came to their wedding feast, and among the mortal guests came all the gods of high Olympus.īut as they sat feasting, one who had not been invited was suddenly in their midst: Eris, the goddess of discord, had been left out because wherever she went she took trouble with her yet here she was, all the same, and in her blackest mood, to avenge the insult.Īll she did-it seemed a small thing-was to toss down on the table a golden apple. The designs are a mix of street-style Lil Wayne designs. His interest in skating has lead him to release his own skateboarding clothing line called Trukfit. He’s a cool person and is pretty outspoken about how much he likes skateboarding. He regularly gets out to skate and you can find videos of him doing lip tricks and doing pop-shuvits off of kickers. Lil Wayne is probably the most enthusiastic skater on this list and also is one of the best. This list isn’t completely exhaustive and I won’t include lesser-known celebrities or else this article would never end. I love to see enthusiasm for the sport and it’s always interesting to me to see a celebrity who I wouldn’t imagine to skate actually skateboarding. They could literally do anything with their free time and they chose skateboarding! That’s cool. It’s very cool to see people with so much money and social clout choose to skateboard. From kids to adults and from your average Joe to A-list celebrities. 6/1/2023 0 Comments Nancy drew mysteries authorThey are introduced to their new “stepbrother” Percy Wainwright with the request that they find a place for him in the company of soldiers going off to fight. Well don’t expect that here!!! This was a narrator in the most basic sense - the equivalent of seeing an author read an excerpt from her book at a book launch. I’ve listened to several audiobooks over the last couple of years and a narrator can really create an immersive experience for the listener by making an effort to make characters sound different. But those efforts seemed pointless when the ‘Taoiseach’ was referred to several times - as those references won’t help the Yanks! The most grating part was the narrator. The author went to some lengths it seemed to make the language more US appropriate with several mentions of sneakers, carts, etc. Just remember to breathe - Jo Spain Magnificent. If you read one thriller that captures the start of lockdown in all its surreal and terrifying uncertainty, let it be this. The back & forth of the timeline was exasperating at times when the same content was trotted out verbatim, just from the perspective of another character. Catherine Ryan Howard has become my go-to writer for utterly absorbing, original stories with a killer twist and 56 Days delivers all this and more. 5/31/2023 0 Comments De raven by Herman BangRemember their cash-and-carry runs? Ideally you know the lairy guy from school because nobody ever questions why you’re friends with from-school friends. It’s always good to invite your slightly lairy friend, load him with pre-mixed caffeinated booze, and let him loose amongst the other guests. Remember when he drank too much on Love Island, lol. All you really want from a dinner party is some actual bantz and some people to shag so you can pretend you “always knew there was something between those two”.
